Please note: moodunits have been designed as a set of instrument and effect Audio Units. These units need to be loaded into any AUv3 compatible host application running on iPad or iPhone, such as GarageBand or AUM. It is important to note that the moodunits app cannot be used as a standalone instrument.

More about moodunits...

Waverley is the principal instrument in the moodunits collection. While it is sample-based, it does not function as a fully-fledged sampling app that allows users to load and edit their own samples. There are already exceptional apps available that offer this functionality.

Waverley in moodunits comes pre-loaded with 30 factory sounds that can be customized using parameters that are likely to be familiar to most users. Even if some of the parameter names may appear technical or intimidating, rest assured that experimenting is encouraged. Waverley cannot be easily "broken" or produce "bad" sounds.

Commonly, iOS music makers rely on analog synthesizers to create popular sounds. While some apps use modeling techniques to generate these sounds, the Waverley instruments in moodunits are based on actual samples obtained from real analog gear. Perfect saw waves may be mathematically generated, but often they can sound too perfect. Analog synthesizers tend to produce less-than-perfect waveforms, which many consider to be a crucial element of their pleasing sound.

The use of samples in Waverley instruments allows them to capture some of the "magic" of real gear without employing CPU-intensive modeling techniques. Consequently, more instances of Waverley can be run within your host since it is not only light on CPU usage but also highly efficient with memory consumption. Furthermore, Waverley offers not only basic analog sounds like saw and square waves but also sounds with effects already applied using top-end boutique signal processors. Therefore, you may find a rich pad sound in Waverley that can be used in your project, without the need for a larger or more resource-intensive instrument accompanied by numerous additional effects Audio Units.

However, Waverley is not solely focused on analog gear. By expanding your musical palette through in-app purchases and free downloads from the MU Store, you can find both conventional and "impossible" instruments that will hopefully inspire you during your music creation process.

Another use case for Waverley is sketching out ideas, especially on less-capable devices like your iPhone while on the move. Should the instrument you desire to use only be available on iPad, fret not. Waverley offers sounds that can come remarkably close to fulfilling your needs, sparing you from distractions of complex user interfaces and numerous parameters.

moodunits also includes some basic effects, enabling you to create exceptional-sounding musical projects using only moodunits and your preferred AU host. In line with moodunits' design philosophy, these effects are designed to be light on CPU usage and expose only essential parameters. Although they may not replace your favorite extensive reverb or delay effects with their multitude of options, their simplicity may offer a refreshing change. The current selection of effects includes delay, reverb, low-pass filter, 10-band EQ, peak limiter, and distortion.

Please note:

The moodunits app cannot be used as a standalone instrument but facilitates access to a detailed PDF user guide. Once the app is launched, moodunits are registered on your device and ready to be utilized for music projects within your chosen AU host. For instructions on using Audio Units, please refer to the relevant documentation for your host application, such as GarageBand or AUM.

Note for advanced users:

With the exception of the filter cutoff frequency and resonance in the filter AU, automation is not available for any of the parameters. Furthermore, it is important to acknowledge that moodunits has been designed with a focus on ease of use, which may result in more advanced users finding some of the features to be basic. To gain a better understanding of the possibilities, please refer to the available screenshots and demo videos online. If you have any doubts or questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
